Maria Grijalva introduced District Elections to the WUSD in 2018 claiming at-large elections violated the California Voting Rights Act. In 2021, a Yolo County judge, Samuel McAdam, ruled that splitting a historic low-income neighborhood, Broderick and Byrte was illegal. Grijalva was the plaintiff responsible for eliminating relics of Jim Crow voting from West Sacramento. See:

They comfort and cuddle our little ones when they scrape a knee, and they keep our kids in safe hands so we can go to work with peace of mind.
In March, West Sacramento’s Teacher’s Association negogiated a contract finally providing for a raise and temporary healthcare.
Starting salary for a teacher is about $59K while the superintendent makes $337K annually. The business assisant superintendent makes $240K, while two other superintendents make $200K.
It’s time to balance the playing field. Taxpayer dollars are meant for classrooms. It’s time to gain oversight of administrative spending!
Fact is, the danger comes from within! Most active shooters aren’t strangers. Research consistently shows that student school shootings are preceded by years of trauma, isolation, and observable warning signs. Shooters often communicate their plans beforehand. They are actually calling out for help. The real solution is prevention. Experts argue that the most effective approach is to invest in creating a culture of love, compassion and empathy (caring), providing mental health resources and implementing robust threat assessment teams to identify and intervene with students in crisis before violence occurs. Especially students with undiagnosed schizophrenia.

They told us they closed the campuses to protect our children from "strangers." But let’s be honest-locking the gates doesn't make our kids safer; it shuts us out.
Yes, a stranger wandering onto campus is a legitimate fear. But true security comes from controlled access - a greeter at the gate, a clear plan - not from barricading the very people who fundraise, volunteer, and love these kids- parents!
In this video, on Oct 20, 2026, I attempted to translate for a spanish speaking parent hours after filing a complaint against the principal with the District. The Principal Katie barreled into me with her body causing a police report to be filed. She called us UNSAFE. Sadly, the incumbent School Board Trustee’s inaction speaks volumes. She stands behaind this principal by not objecting. I did nothing to merit such an assault. Are Latinos dangerous to the campus?
As your School Board Trustee, we will expect principals, teachers and staff to act as professionals.
On August 7, 2026 another incident happended. The Riverbank principal Katie Rodriguez yanked the office door away from a visitor almost causing his fingers to get caught in the door jamb, while his coat jacket did get caught. The principal then flipped the middle finger at the visitor in front of her office staff, district staff and parents. Police reports have been filed.

Riverbank Elementary is experiencing a hostile, anti-parent atmosphere—reflecting broader far-right extremism—that contradicts Washington Unified School District’s (WUSD) stated safe-haven policies and Yolo County’s Anti-Racism Resolution #20-76.
On Sept 16, 2026, Vice Principal Alvarez called the police against a parent who is Spanish speaker, and a fingerprinted PTA leader/volunteer statomg she would not leave the campus. Police were called at 8am, three minutes after Maria Garcia stepped into the newly Closed Campus to drop off her 4th grader while on her way to River City High School. She had to drop off her second student at the high school. To boot, she received a fake two week Stay Away order claiming she refused to leave campus and kept roaming around the campus. The Riverbank principal shut down the entire campus to prove her point. Certain parents are not safe to enter the newly closed campus under her watch. Police reports have been filed.
In another incident, Principal Katie elbowed immigrant/parent Lucia while passing her in the hallway. She was struck. No apology or acknowledgement for bumping her.
FACT: Staff member Sherri Martson announced ICE ought to be called on uncooperative parents!!! When confronted Ms Martson denied making the statment, but witnesses say different! We will not be intimidated by bullies with racist comments! You will be held accountable for your actions.
